Karen Atkins Purifoy is a Certified Etiquette Professional, Image Architect, and the visionary Founder of REFINED…: The Art of REFINED Living. REFINED… is a lifestyle brand dedicated to helping individuals cultivate elegance, confidence, and intention in every facet of their lives—how they live, work, and play. With a focus on etiquette, image, personal and professional development, wellness, and refined living practices, Ms. Purifoy and her team provide transformational services throughout the Washington, D.C., Maryland, and Virginia region and beyond.

With over 25 years of experience in the Interior Design industry, Ms. Purifoy seamlessly integrates her expertise in design, image management, and etiquette to create bespoke solutions for individuals and groups. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Architecture + Design from George Washington University and a Bachelor of Science in Urban Planning and Design from Morgan State University. Her professional training extends to the New York School of Interior Design, as well as advanced studies in Fashion Design and Image Architecture.

A former Vice President of Education with the Association of Image Consultants International (AICI) and Vice President of the National Association of Professional Women (NAPW), Ms. Purifoy has demonstrated exceptional leadership and a deep commitment to empowering others. Her ability to connect across diverse audiences—whether at grassroots initiatives, philanthropic events, or corporate engagements—reflects her dedication to inclusivity and excellence.

Ms. Purifoy is an active member of the Business Women’s Network, a former member of Toastmasters International, and other professional organizations, continuously refining her communication and leadership skills. She is equally passionate about youth development, having served as a Design Instructor for the National Building Museum’s Design Apprenticeship Program and a Business Leader with Junior Achievement Capital District. She has also volunteered her expertise to programs supporting domestic violence survivors, teaching homeless individuals job preparation skills, and mentoring youth in sewing and fashion.

Currently, Ms. Purifoy serves as a Black Student Achievement Program Community Liaison, Scholars Leadership Honors Program Lead and works with the Bridges after-school enrichment program for Howard County Public School System in Columbia, Maryland. Through REFINED, she continues to inspire and guide others to embrace The Art of REFINED Living—an intentional, elegant way of life that harmonizes inner wisdom, outer beauty, wellness, and refinement.
